Masterclasses

Flexible learning for busy creatives…

Jessica offers individual and group masterclasses in composition and orchestration, and is able to tailor these to suit your needs. Most take place over zoom, but there is the possibility for in-person sessions by request.

  • 1-to-1 Individual Lessons are perfect for an in-depth look at a current composition or project that you are working on.

Lessons are $180/hour, or $150/hour for high-school students.

  • Enrolling in a group composition masterclass is the perfect blend of receiving some feedback on your work, and learning from your peers’ music-making. These take inspiration from masterclass sessions that are typical at many universities and summer schools.

How a Group Composition Masterclass Works

    • Participants each receive a 30-minute timeframe each in which to present a work (show score and play a recording), ask questions of Jessica, and receive feedback on the music.
This work may be in a draft stage, or a recently completed work that you would like feedback on to take into future projects.

    • During the remainder of the session, you are able to learn from your colleagues and Jess’ feedback to them - this can provide great insight and inspiration for your own music

    • Masterclasses take place on zoom and are recorded. These recordings are available to participants on-demand after the session concludes.

    • Groups are limited to max. 4 participants per 2-hour session. All participants are expected to attend the entire masterclass.
Note that on occasion, availability and bookings may mean result in fewer than 4 participants in a masterclass. If this is the case, we will be sure to let participants know ahead of time.

Group Composition Masterclasses are $90 per participant, or $75 for high-school students.
Contact us below to find out when the next group composition masterclass is running.

If you love the sound of this masterclass format, but would prefer to attend with only colleagues you know in the session, please let us know. If you have a group already gathered we can book a custom session.

  • Group orchestration masterclasses are content-based sessions that blend music theory and orchestration, and discuss practical applications for your creative practice. These are perfect for those wishing to expand their musical technique and understanding.

How a Group Orchestration Masterclass works

    • Jessica will present an analysis of 1-2 works per 2-hour session. The works for each session will be advertised in advance.

    • Jessica’s analysis will particularly focus on orchestration techniques, and, generally, how similar ones could be deployed in your works.

    • There will be opportunity for Q&A from participants for each work

    • Sessions are capped at 12 participants per session

    • Sessions last for 2 hours

    • Sessions take place on zoom and are recorded. These recordings are available to participants on-demand after the session concludes

Group orchestration masterclasses are $65 per participant.

Enquire through the form or see below for upcoming sessions, and the works that will be discussed in them.

Current Group Orchestration Masterclasses Available

Orchestrating Small Strings for Film

30 April 2025 7-9pm

Jessica will examine examples from her recent score “Mozart’s Sister” which recorded one violin and one cello into a bed of samples. This is typical of Australian film scores with small budgets. She will discuss how to create a big, full sound and maximise budget. Book now by filling out the Masterclass EOI form.

Orchestrating for Full Orchestra

28 May 2025 7-9pm

Jessica will use examples from her score to a yet-to-be released documentary, recorded by Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2024. She will look at how to write effectively for full orchestra, and discuss tips for doublings, melody and accompaniment, creating a ‘mood’, and getting the most out of orchestral colour.
She will be looking at a film score, but the techniques that she’ll discuss will be applicable for anyone writing or arranging for an orchestra (either to be recorded or to perform live). Book now by filling out the Masterclass EOI form.
